Company NameIndependent Cosmetic Advice Ltd

Dr Bob Hefford took two degrees in chemistry at the University of Leeds.  His first job was with Unilever Research where he was first introduced to the detail of hair by Dr Alan Swift at the (soon to be closed) laboratory at Isleworth. He moved to the Port Sunlight Laboratory where he moved from basic research into hair and skin product development.

After 11 years with Unilever he moved onto Bristol-Myers Squibb based near to Newcastle upon Tyne and had to learn a new language.  Bob lasted 13 years with BMS and became Director of their EMEA R&D laboratory based within their factory site at Cramlington.

In 2001 BMS sold its Clairol Division to P&G.  Bob turned down the generous offer of a job with P&G and decided to start a consultancy called Independent Cosmetic Advice Ltd. This company is now into its 14th year and offers advice and direction on cosmetic science, formulation, regulation and a range of other subjects but in particular hair dyes and hair colouring products.

Bob gives two courses on surfactants for BACS and is also a long standing member of the SCS and has been involved in organising their “Principles and practice of cosmetic science course”. He maintains an on-going interest in education particularly in the area of cosmetic and surfactant science as well as the chemistry of archaeological preservation.
