A provocative session that aims to untangle the conflation of terms such as ‘green’, ‘natural’, ‘sustainable’, ‘organic’ and ‘healthy’. With growing scarcity of resources and rising ethical consumerism, the cosmetics industry has doubled down on its efforts to be ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’.

But has switching from petrochemical to agricultural-based ingredients created more problems than it solved? Can the industry’s need for novelty and innovation be reconciled with the over-exploitation of fragile and finite plant and mineral resources? And what about the future? Will brewing up ingredients in vats of genetically modified bacteria still be called ‘natural’ – or ‘sustainable’?
