In recent years cosmetic preservation has been under the spot light of the press, consumers and regulators. As a consequence about 50% of the substances listed on Annex V of the Regulation EC/1223/2009 have been affected, with some even banned or to-be banned.

Formulators have both a legal and an ethical duty to adequately preserve cosmetic formulae in order to provide consumers with microbiologically stable products.

This unprecedented shrinking of Annex V, as well as an ever growing interest in more natural products, has pushed the industry toward a heavier use of green and alternative ways to effectively preserve cosmetic products.

Andrea Mitarotonda will discuss what strategies can be put in place when pushing the boundaries of preservation with a special eye to such topics as research and education as key points for successfully formulating products that can stand the challenge of microbial burden, as well as creating opportunities for innovation.
