• Attending the in-cosmetics Formulation Summit 2018

The Summit for 2018 was “Up Close and Personalised”, and addressed the numerous formulation challenges and opportunities around bespoke and customised personal care products. We gathered leading international experts across the make-up, skincare, fragrance and haircare sectors to guide formulators and R&D professionals in the many ways they could respond to the personalisation trend.

  • How did delegates benefit from attending?

The summit in 2018 was tailored to formulators, R&D professionals, and industry decision makers, with delegates benefiting from the following:

    • Learning what new technologies were driving the trend
    • Being inspired by smart ingredients and the bespoke products tapping into the market
    • Gaining expert advice on the practicalities of personalised formulating
    • Uncovering the regulation and safety challenges around customised beauty products
    • Networking with existing colleagues as well as making lucrative new connections
  • What was covered at the conference?

Up Close and Personalised addressed, in-depth, all aspects of personalised beauty, with topics including artificial intelligence, circadian rhythms, DNA, the influence of algorithms and formulating for individual aspirations, lifestyles and values. Each subject aimed to prepare formulators for the future of personalisation within the market, so they could take what they learned from the summit and profit from it in the lab.

    • We launched three new products yesterday (24th October) and this was in part due to it coinciding the Formulation Summit as we believe those attending are our ideal audience. The delegates are people whose job and responsibility it is to push the boundaries when it comes to formulation and innovation. The summit provides us with the perfect opportunity to discuss new ideas and create new experiences for consumers as it gathers inspirational people from all over the world to form a great melting-pot of creativity and ideas.

      • We wanted to come to the summit as we thought the theme was an important trend in the industry. We want to get a deeper understanding of what customers want and we heard some brilliant speakers speak on a broad range of topics. Depending on the theme, we would return next year. We would like to maybe see discussion of new beauty routines and how routines have changed over the years.

        • We were drawn to the summit due to the plastics and vegan products sessions as this is a key focus for our consumers. Going off the previous presentations, we anticipate it to be highly informative and interesting.  The summit was definitely worthwhile coming to and is very well-organised. In the future, I would perhaps like to see a focus on changes in regulations.

        • I have found the summit to be very informative and useful for my business, an indie brand. The speakers have been great and I especially enjoyed the talks on the application of AI.

        • We are patent and trademark attorneys so the summit is a great opportunity for us to keep up to date with the industry for our current clients and to network and connect with potential new clients. Perhaps a more formal 1:1 networking sessions that was set up in advance would also work well. I would love to meet medium-sized British companies who seek help with trademarking, patent protection and branding.

        • I was attracted by the personalisation theme and have not been disappointed! I have found the presentations to be very helpful for my formulation company and was especially interested in the talks by Andy Postles and Vivienne Rudd.

        • I came to the summit as I wanted to know more about personalisation as I work for a small, niche brand. I was familiar with a lot of what the speakers were saying, however, this was still valuable for me as it validated my own thoughts. It was also very useful from a networking perspective as I was able to meet lots of different people from an array of backgrounds. I would attend the summit again as I think it was a good way in which to learn how to take my company in a new direction and learn about the latest opportunities
